Spiney Sea Star

by Suzanne Tate, illustrated by James Melvin
soft cover, $4
published by Nags Head Art

Each year since 1988, Suzanne and James have created two new attractive, informative and scientifically accurate paperback books for young to intermediate reading level children. This latest offering is number 24 in their Nature Series. The subjects are all seashore related, and the first book of the series is Crabby & Nabby: A Tale of Two Blue Crabs. Almost all of the others are about different kinds of fish, but the series includes pelicans, alligators, otters and whales. Spiney Sea Star is, of course, a starfish, which is not a fish at all.

Teachers and parents from New York to Florida buy these books every year for home study and classroom use. The authors have produced teaching guides to further enrich the books' educational value. I've not used the teaching guides myself, but still find each book marvelous and charming. This is a wonderful tradition for families to share.

The author and illustrator have begun a History Series with local emphasis. Helping the Wright Brothers is an example of a title in this series. Read on!
